Eyes Wide Open Exhibit On June 23, 2006 Women Against War organized a one-day display of Eyes Wide Open: New York, the powerful American Friends Service Committee exhibit honoring the casualties of the war in Iraq. Hundreds of people saw displayed in the park behind the New York State Capitol 117 pairs of empty combat boots representing New York State soldiers who had died in the war by that date, as well as 50 pairs of shoes of women, men and children representing the more than 100,000 Iraqi civilians who have died since the US invasion. A program from 11 AM to 2 PM reinforced the message of the human cost of war – with a Reading of the Names of the New York State soldiers and of Iraqi civilians – and of messages from poets, singers and leaders from many faith traditions. The exhibit was co-sponsored by Albany Friends Meeting and Bethlehem Neighbors for Peace. Cheryl Bellus – Opening Remarks
